A unique example of the possibilities in aluminium is the
Uiverbrug bridge at the Riekerhaven in Amsterdam. This bridge from 2003
is the world's first aluminium collapsible bridge that is also suitable
for heavy truck transport. Due to the low weight of the material
aluminium, this bridge - in contrast to most collapsible bridges - does
not require a tail piece with a counterweight. A simple cylinder was
sufficient here, so that a so-called bascule cellar was not necessary.
In addition, both the energy consumption during operation and the total
lifecycle costs of the bridge are low.
