Innovative solutions in aluminium

Bayards Aluminium Solutions designs, engineers, manufactures and installs pedestrian and cycle bridges. The lightweight characteristics of aluminium make it an extremely suitable material for this application. Our aluminium bridges are also minimal maintenance and require only a minimal foundation. As a result, our bridges can be installed quickly, minimizing on-site traffic hinder.

Nichols Bridge, Chicago

This Chicago pedestrian bridge connects the third floor on the West side of The Art Institute of Chicago with the "Great Lawn" in Millennium Park. The bridge was designed by Renzo Piano who also designed the adjacent part of the institute. The bridge, inspired by a ship's hull, is over 190 meters long and 4.6 meters wide. The aluminium bridge sections are anti-slip and the surface is heated by an integrated heating system to ensure snow and ice don’t stand a chance in making the bridge slippery and impassable in the winter.

IJburg bridges Amsterdam

A unique example of the possibilities in aluminium is the Uiverbrug bridge at the Riekerhaven in Amsterdam. This bridge from 2003 is the world's first aluminium collapsible bridge that is also suitable for heavy truck transport. Due to the low weight of the material aluminium, this bridge - in contrast to most collapsible bridges - does not require a tail piece with a counterweight. A simple cylinder was sufficient here, so that a so-called bascule cellar was not necessary. In addition, both the energy consumption during operation and the total lifecycle costs of the bridge are low.

Stokkenbrug Cycle bridge, Purmerend

Bayards supplied a 130-meter-long aluminium bridge deck for the Stokkenbrug in Purmerend. This bridge deck with a special anti-wear layer is resistant to thawing and freezing and is very low in maintenance. The cycle and pedestrian bridge is constructed of fully prefabricated parts of 16 meters long and assembled on-site. For ecological reasons, Jord den Hollander opted for the material aluminium in his striking design. The municipality of Purmerend was looking for a distinctive bridge that didn’t disrupt the experience of the Weidevenne nature reserve,  and this design has certainly succeeded in doing so!

Westerdock Bridge, Amsterdam

Bayards engineered, manufactured, and installed this hydraulic bascule bridge in the heart of Amsterdam in 2003. The bridge is constructed entirely of aluminum. To ensure sufficient grip on the aluminum bridge deck, the bridge deck received a special surface treatment.

Bridge deck replacement Strandbrug, Lelystad

This cycle and pedestrian bridge in Lelystad, 74 meters long and 5.5 meters wide, originally had a wooden bridge deck. We replaced this bridge deck in 2012 with two prefabricated aluminium bridge decks with a wear layer, each in a different color. These decks have a very long life cycle. Because all parts were prefabricated, the assembly time of the bridge decks was very short and the renewed bridge could be put back into use quickly.

Bridge deck replacement Maarsserbrug, Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal

We provided the Maarsser Bridge with an aluminium bridge deck by replacing the narrow concrete cycle lane with a wider aluminium deck, which emergency services can also use. The new, wider deck could be installed without modifications to the existing substructure, since the aluminium bridge deck weighs significantly less than the original concrete deck. With this new aluminium deck, the options within the bridge's capacity were expanded and the maintenance costs were also kept to a minimum.
